1st Birthday Princess

Little girls can be lots of things. They can be messy, bossy, silly, funny, pretty, playful, rambunctious, creative, happy, etc…. And, little girls can be princesses! What better day to be a princess than on your birthday?

This particular post is about a princess on her first birthday. Well, it’s mostly about what she wore for her first birthday. This little girl is a bright eyed doll with a mommy who loves to dress her up. She is so stinking cute. I would want to dress her up too.

The mom wanted something special for her to wear for her birthday, so she approached me with some ideas.

This was the first image she sent me. It’s cute.

But she wanted the sleeves to be more like theses.

When I first saw it, I thought that is pretty stinking cute, but then I had a problem with it. Sequins can itch and even hurt some kids. As a dance teacher I am fully aware of how they can cut up sensitive skin. I knew that I didn’t want sequins against her sweet baby skin. That meant I would have to make a few adjustments to the design so that she wouldn’t get all scratched up.

I hit the fabric store and found the sweetest pink material. It was soft and I knew it would feel good to wear. I couldn’t find any gold or sequin that I liked. Then it hit me. I had some gorgeous gold/champagne sequin left over from last Christmas. It would be perfect for this project because it would help this romper look less like a dance costume and more like a dressy outfit.

I got to work. The shape is almost identical to the shape of the romper I made for my niece’s 1st birthday and almost the exact same size, so I used the pattern I made for that. I started piecing it together and came up with a plan so the sequins wouldn’t touch her. I trimmed around the edges of the legs and the top with pink so she wouldn’t get cut.

I love these sequins.

I think it turned out pretty great! I love the pink and gold together. It looks very special and very princess like. The little girl’s aunt made her a crown to wear and her mom adorned her with jewelry and the cutest gold shoes. Here are a few pictures from her photo shoot. She looked beautiful! Plus, the photos are awesome since her dad in the photographer.

I think she makes a great princess. What about you?

Another Year

Today I turn 28. Where has the time gone? It feels like it was just last week that I was writing my last birthday post. You know I have to say something about another year wiser and growing and learning and all that kind of stuff blah, blah blah… Which I guess all of that stuff is true but I really am in a very similar place to last year. I haven’t moved or changed jobs or done anything crazy. I mean, a lot of stuff happens in a year, but looking back it doesn’t feel like that much is different.

A big part of my life is my dog. We celebrated our one year anniversary not too long ago. I am still so thankful that I brought her home. She is a big crazy mess of energy, and she really would like to catch a bunny one day, but I love her anyways. I wouldn’t trade her for the world.

Another big part of my life is my family. They’ve always been super important and always will be. It was actually really fun celebrating my birthday last Friday night with my dad, step-mom, mom, step-dad, sister, brother-in-law, and niece. My niece has stolen my heart. I love that little girl more than I could have ever imagined. She is so beautiful and special and perfect!

I’ve also realized this year that I’ve made some pretty cool friends along the way. I’m not always great at keeping up with people when we don’t live close by, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t made lasting impressions. I’ve had friends getting married and having babies and it’s been beautiful to see their lives grow and change. I have other friends that will always make sure I have a beer if I need one. And I even have one pretty awesome friend who took me flying in his airplane a few times. All these people are so wonderful and different and special to me.

So here I am ready to take on the next year. Maybe the next 12 months will be more exciting than the past 12 months. I’m not denying that there were ups and downs, because they definitely existed. I don’t mind it not being too crazy of a year. Sometimes it’s nice to not feel too chaotic. Overall I am very blessed and have a great life (even if I do complain sometimes). I know I have a wonderful support system and I am very lucky for the opportunities I have been given. I know God is watching over me and will lead me through another great year, whatever it may bring!

I hope everyone has a great day….And Happy Earth Day too!

Birthday Bubble

It was a year ago today that the most precious wonderful miracle would entered into our family. She’s probably the best thing that has ever happened to us. We waited at the hospital all day and half the night until we heard the news. Alex, my sister, had finally popped her baby out. Well…I don’t think it popped out quite that easily. She did decide to make a turn half way out, but those are minor details. Never the less, the baby had arrived and it was a perfectly healthy little girl. I think we were all in love before we even saw her.

Over the year we have seen her grow and change and grow and change and….She has a sassy little defiant personality that is pretty adorable, but might be a pain when she’s 10-18, but most girls are anyways. Right? She has been a wonderful baby. She is very sweet and loving. She has always slept amazing. She hardly ever cries. She will be the class clown one day. She doesn’t like to be told no. And I’m pretty sure she eats more food than I do.

With a year of life comes a birthday bash. Now I still can’t wrap my head around this concept of a gigantic first birthday party. The baby will not remember it, but WOW! People go all out. You shouldn’t expect anything less than over the top when it comes to my sister. She invited 75 people. I wasn’t even sure if I actually even knew 75 people. The party was last weekend. It was beautiful, successful, fun, and creative. Blow up water pools everywhere, sprinklers, a slip-n-slide, photo booth, treasure hunt, arts and crafts, and a food table that was Pinterest worthy. We took plenty of photos and videos so that tater-tot would see it one day because we know her sweet little brain can’t remember stuff liked that quite yet.

In all of my sister’s crazy over the top-ness she requested a birthday bubble. Bubbles are those cute little ruffle-y summer outfits/rompers for little girls. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. It was one of the most difficult and time consuming things I’ve ever made, but she was so stinking cute in it. We went to pick out fabric and looked at a million pictures online to kind of get an idea of what she wanted. This is what we came up with…

The Front.

The Back.

Anchor buttons.

They make this cool ribbon with snaps on it, so you don’t have to be able to put them directly onto the fabric. This stuff proved to be amazing for me.

Here she is in her outfit playing with the toys she opened. The cell phone was a favorite.

charley birthday bike

This is Tater-tot on my birthday present to her. A Radio Flyer Adjustable seat bike. I know she can’t ride it yet, and it might be a while before she can, but it was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen in my life, besides her of course. Also, I found it at a thrift store for $5 and couldn’t resist such a great deal. She got a matching blue helmet too. (Thanks for the pictures Gran. I stole them)

I have no kind of tutorial or advice for making something like this. Actually, my advice is: just purchase a cute outfit in the store. I should have gotten a pattern or something to help guide me, but I’m stubborn. It turned out great and I’m proud of it, but it might be about a million years before I make anything else like this. I now know why these bubbles are so expensive at the store.

Happy Birthday Today my little Tater-Tot!

Aunt Sammie loves you soooooooo….. much! I think you are perfect, wonderful, and special. I can’t wait to see you grow another year!
